Easy Mashed Potatoes
These Easy Creamy Mashed Potatoes are rich, buttery, and incredibly comforting. Yukon Gold potatoes make naturally creamy mashed potatoes with a buttery flavor of their own, while garlic salt and freshly ground pepper keep the seasoning simple and delicious. They're easy enough for a weeknight dinner but impressive enough for holidays and special occasions.
Ingredients
- 1.5 pounds Yukon Gold or yellow potatoes, scrubbed and cleaned
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- Fresh ground pepper (about 20 twists/grinds, or to taste)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (add a little more if needed for your desired consistency)
Optional Garnishes
- Fresh parsley
- Sliced green onions or chives
Notes: You can leave the skins on for extra fiber and nutrition, but peeling the potatoes will give you an even creamier texture. Whole milk or half-and-half can be substituted for the heavy cream, but heavy cream provides the richest flavor and texture.
Equipment
- Potato masher or wire masher
- Small or medium pot
- Colander
Directions
-
Dice the potatoes into evenly sized pieces and place them in a pot. Fill the pot with enough water to cover the potatoes by about 1 inch.
-
Bring the water to a boil and cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
-
Drain the potatoes in a colander and return them to the pot.
-
Mash the potatoes until mostly smooth.
-
Add the butter, garlic salt, and freshly ground pepper. Stir until the butter has melted and everything is well combined.
-
Pour in the heavy cream and continue mixing until the potatoes reach your desired consistency. Add a little extra cream if you prefer creamier mashed potatoes.
-
Garnish with parsley, green onions, or chives if desired, and serve warm.
Tips & Information
- Avoid overmixing the potatoes, as they can become gummy.
- Yukon Gold potatoes naturally make creamy mashed potatoes and don't require much butter or cream.
- Taste and adjust the garlic salt and pepper before serving.
- If you're not serving them immediately, keep the potatoes covered on low heat and stir occasionally to maintain their creamy texture.
Serving Suggestions: These mashed potatoes pair perfectly with Grilled London Broil, Chimichurri, Tin Foil Asparagus, grilled chicken, meatloaf, or just about any comfort-food dinner.
